Classification of Drugs and Alcohol

Street Names:
Angel dust, elephant, hog.

Description:
Sold as powder of any color, in crystals, liquid, tablet, capsule or past.  Frequently d off as LSD, THC, mescaline or other drugs.  In samples analyzed at drug testing labs, content has ranged from 1.3 to 81 mg.  However, 1 to 5 mg. is enough for a high.  Can be sniffed, smoked, swallowed or injected.

Origin and Medical Uses:
Originally developed as an intravenous anaesthetic, but now discarded for human use.  Later used in veterinary medicine as general anaesthetic or tranquilizer for large animals, but such use is now rare.

Short Term Effects:
Effects last 3 to 18 hours.  It can produce a state of pleasurable intoxication, sense of separation from surroundings, perceptual distortions, difficulty in concentrating and communicating.  Users may become highly confused, paranoid, terrified, aggressive or passive.  Bad trips are more common with PCP than other drugs.  Overdose can cause convulsions, coma, and death.   

Long Term Effects:
Flashback may occur.  Persistent speech problems, depression, anxiety or more severe psychological consequences.

Tolerance and Dependence:
Regular use produces tolerance.  Chronic users may become psychologically dependent.  PCP does not cause physical dependence.
